Workshop Description
The textbook has been central to education for centuries. Its design and use to transmit knowledge has been crucial for the advancement of humanity. However, production of knowledge in all subjects far surpasses the ability of a traditional textbook to be up to date. Hardware costs have been, and continue to be dramatically decreasing while computing power increases to the point that portable devices can begin to replace the textbook. How such textbooks can revolutionize teaching and the opportunities
for more student-centered teaching will be discussed. The current options available for digital books will be shared, as well.
All participants will be provided a complimentary interactive digital middle school science book during the workshop.
Goals
• Share current options for replacing the traditional textbook.
• Provide a complimentary copy of an interactive digital middle school science book.
• Analyze the educational framework of a digital book and how it can alter classroom teaching.
• Participants develop a list of digital book needs that will better support classroom teaching and learning.
